Education

Coffee County schools compete well against those in the state, including a college preparatory program that includes Advanced Placement and dual enrollment opportunities through South Georgia State College and Wiregrass Georgia Technical College.

Coffee County School System also partners with Wiregrass Georgia Technical College and a number of industry partners to offer Wiregrass Regional College & Career Academy, where students participate in rigorous, self-paced academics with career-based learning opportunities.

Healthcare

Excellent healthcare is available from Coffee Regional Medical Center, an Emory Healthcare Network Affiliate that collaborates with Emory in Atlanta on initiatives to improve care locally. More than 800 Board-certified and specialty physicians, mid-level providers, and expert nursing staff comprise the healthcare team. The medical center ranks in the top ten on Georgia Trend magazine’s list of Top Small Hospitals in the state.

Things to Do

Here in the heart of South Georgia, Coffee County has an impressive array of cultural experiences that embrace history, nature, sports, the arts, shopping and dining, and live music and festivals. Along Highway 441 through downtown Douglas there are restaurants, bakeries, shops and boutiques, salons, and spas. You won’t want to miss the 1940s-era movie house, The Martin Centre, with its Art Deco architecture hosting sold-out musical performances. Athletic types will appreciate Douglas-Coffee County Parks and Recreation’s year-round sports and programs, as well as parks that connect our neighborhoods with tennis courts, walking trails, playgrounds, pools, picnic areas, and much more.

Just minutes from Douglas, residents enjoy General Coffee State Park, which features a Heritage Farm Museum, paddling on the Seventeen Mile River, 13.4 miles of equestrian trails, and a campground. In the Broxton community, people appreciate the marvel of the fractured sandstone rocks, known as the Broxton Rocks, along a secluded four-mile stretch of Rocky Creek.

Cost of Living

Douglas-Coffee County has both sprawling countryside living options and in-city housing near downtown nightlife. There are lakefront homes, historic homes, and loft rentals, in additional to traditional single-family home neighborhoods. Small or large farms, apartments, condominiums, and townhomes, you’ll find them all here.

On a national cost of living index, Coffee County scores 26.5% lower than the national average and 21% lower than the statewide average for Georgia. Housing and Transportation costs are the main reasons for Coffee County’s low cost of living. Housing costs are nearly 60% less than the national average and Transportation costs are about 30% less than they are nationally.
